What is expat coaching?

Our corporate world is becoming increasingly global and diverse. Employees with different personal and cultural backgrounds, nationalities and needs have shaped international organizations for many years. That's good! The times when companies from the DACH region mainly filled management positions with seconded expats during expansions are finally coming to an end.

It is primarily cultural challenges that make a posting successful. In many cases, the use of expats is necessary for the transfer of know-how when setting up a new production facility or branch. Executives on international assignments become "global leaders" who have to overcome a number of challenges. In any case, different cultures meet.

Why expat coaching?

The ever-increasing pressure of the shortage of skilled workers, which makes the search for talent difficult in almost all industrialized countries, poses ever greater challenges for managers. If there is a cultural component involved, personal and interpersonal boundaries are often reached very quickly. New approaches are needed. Understanding other cultures, opening the corporate culture to the outside world and culturally compatible behavior in the host country are absolutely necessary for a successful assignment.

In these cases, managers and employees who are on foreign assignments should never be left alone. This is where "Global Coaching" comes in as a highly successful management and leadership method. The balancing act between culturally "compatible" behavior on the one hand and the preservation of one's own cultural character on the other hand is extremely difficult and often decides between the success or failure of an assignment abroad.

A SUITABLE PROFILE FOR MANAGERS IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT IS CHALLENGING

Leaders must lead people and teams effectively across. First and foremost, this requires building interpersonal relationships and gaining trust. Global leaders must have a high ability to change perspectives, show flexibility and have a high tolerance for ambiguity. Resilience, the ability to deal with conflict and steadfastness are further characteristics of a successful global leader.
